Here's a workaround: use the MariaDB Connect engine.
https://mariadb.com/kb/en/library/connect-odbc-table-type-accessing-tables-from-another-dbms/

It's not particularly fast, but it works and somehow translates the MariaDB dialect of SQL to the Access dialect.

You can call stored queries in the Access database too.

Nope. I have given up for the moment. The MariaDB trick does work fine though.
